If you compare the theoretical compute power of the Edison, it becomes more competitive. It has a specific use though.. that isn't exactly like a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or Beagle Box.
Where the Edison really shines is that it has integrated WiFI, and Bluetooth. Two things that normally on their own cost more than $50. It's also nice that the Edision is a lower power microcontroller. Also, I think newegg is the best place to buy this thing. I think I paid $88 shipped for the "EDI1ARDUIN.AL.K" kit. (Edison + full sized Arduino-style breakout + Mounting brackets/spacers)
They also sell the Edison board by itself for $50 free shipping last I checked. But prices, and availability will fluctuate, I'm sure.
