I suspect that your monitor went dark because the signal was sent to connectors other than DVI.

Here's what I suggest:

1. reinstall the Intel drivers
2. connect your monitor via DVI -- it'll still be dark
3. connect a monitor (any monitor) via the VGA connector on your ASUS H81M-A motherboard
4. if you have an HD TV, connect it via the HDMI connector on your motherboard
5. one of the connectors will receive the signal -- tell us which one by reply to this thread
6. to get the signal to your monitor connected via DVI, press the Windows key + P (you may need to press it one, two or three times), then go into the Control Panel | Intel(R) HD Graphics and configure it to favor that connection
